0. Nickel Demand Mitigation: a $100Bn / Year Issue?

Will there be enough Nickel available for EV batteries to enable the Energy Transition? Proposed new mining projects may not meet demand, resulting in higher and volatile prices for Nickel, and delays in supply. In 2024, 65% of the 3.5 Million tonnes of Primary Nickel production was used to make Stainless Steels, and 16% was used to make batteries. Battery production is growing fast but stainless steel production is growing steadily as well. By 2035 we might need 6 Million Tonnes / Year of Primary Nickel.

Act now to use less Primary Nickel in Stainless Steels by increased recycling and selecting steel Grades with lower Nickel contents.

Generally ‘lower Nickel’ = CHEAPER

Also ‘lower Primary Nickel’ = LOWER CO2 EMISSIONS

We propose a Protocol for purchases of Stainless Steels by which the manufacturer will agree to a maximum Primary Nickel content in the product.
